Risk of EB-1 Green Card Process Halting for Indians in America
The US has warned of a temporary halt in the employment-based first preference EB-1 green card process for Indian citizens. The US Department of State has stated that due to high demand and usage of visas by Indian applicants, this category may reach its limit before the fiscal year ending September 30.
If this limit is reached, issuing visas under the EB-1 category may have to be temporarily stopped. No new requests under this category will be accepted further. This situation may also cause long waits for Indians in other employment-based visa categories, such as EB-2 and investor category EB-5.
The EB-1 category is given to individuals with extraordinary talent in various fields including science, arts, and education. Visa holders in this category receive green cards quickly, allowing them to settle and work permanently in the US.
The department stated that it is monitoring the situation and will take action if necessary.
