5.0 Magnitude Earthquake in Tibet, Relief Work Underway

A 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck Tibet, with its epicenter about 10 kilometers deep underground. Following the quake, relief and rescue operations are in full swing, with special equipment and dog teams deployed to detect signs of life under the debris.

The rainless floods in Nepal have claimed thousands of lives, and hundreds are still missing. Immediately after this disaster, the earthquake in Tibet has caused panic in the region. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences, the earthquake measured a magnitude of 5.0, considered moderate. Its epicenter was about 10 kilometers deep underground.

As soon as the tremors were felt, people in areas near the border rushed to safe places. Teams engaged in relief and rescue operations are searching for people trapped under the debris. According to a report by the Chinese state broadcaster, the debris is being scanned with the help of life-detection equipment and sniffer dogs to rescue any survivors.

Recently, a massive glacier collapsed on the Tibet-Nepal border, releasing a flood of ice, rocks, mud, and water. So far, more than 1,268 people have died and over 4,200 remain missing in this natural disaster.

The situation is also serious in China’s Tibet region. Heavy rains and debris have washed away roads, bridges, and streets. The main road connecting China to Nepal via the Kerung border had broken, cutting off disaster-affected areas from the outside world. After hard work, this road has now been opened for heavy vehicles, allowing relief materials and equipment to be delivered.

Relief workers are crossing dangerous mountains. Continuous rain and cracking rocks in narrow valleys make rescue operations risky. River flows are six to seven meters per second faster than normal, causing difficulties for excavation machines and their operators.

This earthquake has worsened the ongoing glacier disaster and flood devastation in the Himalayan region. Relief efforts are still ongoing, and attempts to rescue people trapped under debris are intensifying.
