President Ruto Orders Tata Chemicals to Leave the Country

Kenya's President William Ruto has asked Tata Chemicals Magadi to pack up and leave the country. He stated that his government has identified new investors to take over operations in this sector and plans to bring in two new companies.

President Ruto said that Tata Chemicals Magadi had a 100-year contract, but the company did not invest adequately during this period. He said in Swahili, "A few days ago, I told them to pack up and leave." He believes that Kenya should gain far more economic benefits from its mineral resources compared to the current situation.

On July 28, Tata Chemicals Magadi's mining operations were suspended on charges of not complying with mining laws. The government is now preparing to bring in two new companies to increase investment in the area, promote local processing, and create employment opportunities.

Tata Chemicals Magadi is part of India's Tata Group and operates in Lake Magadi, located about 120 kilometers southwest of Kenya's capital Nairobi. The company produces over 350,000 tons of soda ash annually, which is exported to India, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and other parts of Africa.

The company has submitted all the necessary documents requested by officials and complied with regulations. At that time, Cabinet Secretary for Mining Affairs Hassan Joho said that the company's operations would remain suspended until it fulfills its legal responsibilities.

The suspension of operations has affected about 500 employees as well as contractors, suppliers, and surrounding communities.
