Ferry boat breaks down near Gateway of India, 38 people rescued safely

Around 8:30 pm on Thursday night, the ferry boat named ‘Anwari’ broke down in the Arabian Sea near Gateway of India. All 38 people on board were safely rescued from the sea. Mumbai Police cited a technical fault in the initial investigation.

The ‘Anwari’ ferry boat offers about a half-hour sea ride from Gateway of India. On Thursday night, the boat was returning after completing the ride when it suddenly stopped working about 1.5 nautical miles away in the sea. This caused panic among the passengers.

The crew member immediately informed the control room. Upon receiving the information, Mumbai Police took action and assessed the situation. Nearby ferry operators were alerted. Within minutes, the ferry boat named ‘Azad Hind’ arrived at the spot and tied the broken-down ‘Anwari’ with a rope and started towing it towards the Gateway of India jetty.

During this, the passengers on the boat appeared frightened. Due to good coordination between the police, ferry operators, and crew members, the rescue operation was completed quickly. All 34 passengers and 4 crew members were brought safely to shore. By around 9:30 pm, all 38 people were safely disembarked.

Mumbai Police stated that the initial investigation revealed a technical fault in the boat. A detailed investigation is underway, including checks on the ferry’s fitness and safety standards to prevent such incidents in the future.
