PM Modi Proposes BRICS Distress Network to Rescue Seafarers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has proposed the establishment of a BRICS distress network aimed at rescuing seafarers in distress across international waters. The initiative seeks to connect maritime authorities and missions of member countries to provide timely assistance during emergencies, Modi said at the BRICS summit.

Seafarers play a crucial role in global trade but often lack adequate support during difficult times. The proposed network would offer assistance with distress alerts, medical aid, information to families, and evacuation operations when necessary. It is envisioned as a structured, multi-layered mechanism featuring regular advisories, additional emergency helplines, and 24x7 control rooms to ensure speed, scale, and last-mile impact.

Modi emphasized that humanity’s confidence in global institutions depends on their ability to effectively address such problems. The BRICS distress network aims to enhance cooperation among member countries to safeguard the welfare of seafarers navigating challenging maritime environments.
