It is a tradition to offer butter and sugar to Lord Shri Krishna on Janmashtami. This time, offering Makhana Paag has emerged as a new and nutritious option. It is easy to make and crunchy as a delicious prasad.

To make Makhana Paag, first heat 2 tablespoons of desi ghee in a heavy-bottomed pan. Add chopped cashews, almonds, and musk melon seeds and roast until lightly golden, then take them out on a plate.

Now add the remaining ghee to the same pan and roast the makhanas on low heat, stirring continuously for 5-6 minutes. When the makhanas break easily when pressed between fingers, turn off the gas. Once cooled, coarsely grind the makhanas in a mixer.

Lightly dry roast grated coconut as well. To prepare the syrup, add sugar and water to a pan and cook on medium heat. After the sugar completely melts, let it boil for 4-5 minutes. To check the syrup, take a drop between your finger and thumb; if it forms a thread, the syrup is ready.

Add the coarsely ground makhana, roasted coconut, and fried dry fruits to the syrup. Mix everything well and keep stirring continuously until the mixture starts leaving the pan's bottom and thickens.

Now grease a plate or tray with a little ghee. Pour the prepared mixture onto the plate and spread it with the help of a spoon. When the paag is slightly warm, cut it into your preferred square or barfi shapes with a knife. Once completely cooled, separate the pieces.

Offer this paag to Lord Shri Krishna along with a tulsi leaf.
