ISRO launches first geosynchronous earth imaging satellite EOS-05
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the EOS-05 satellite on September 4, 2025, from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, using the GSLV-F17 rocket. This is India's first geosynchronous earth imaging satellite, which will monitor large parts of the country and border areas from an altitude of 36,000 kilometers.
This was the 19th flight of GSLV-F17, launched from the second launch pad. The EOS-05 satellite will be placed in a sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit. A four-meter diameter OGV composite payload fairing was used in this mission.
EOS-05 is being called 'Baz' or 'Unblinking Eye'. This satellite will remain in geosynchronous orbit, where it will rotate with the Earth's rotation speed and keep continuous watch over India. According to ISRO, this satellite will send high-resolution images of the entire country every 30 minutes, and can also capture images every 5 minutes over border areas such as the Pakistan-China border.
This kind of orbit allows repeated imaging of large areas, a capability different from traditional low-earth orbit satellites. This will provide significant assistance in earth observation, weather monitoring, disaster management, and strategic border surveillance.
Data from EOS-05 will be used to monitor natural disasters, environmental changes, and weather-related activities. This satellite will also assist in monitoring floods, cyclones, and other events.
ISRO conducted this mission after two unsuccessful launches in the past five years. Two missions in January 2026 and March 2025 failed due to technical problems in the cryogenic stage and the third stage.
The GSLV-F17 rocket successfully completed the mission this time, marking the 19th flight of ISRO's geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle program.
According to ISRO experts, the capability of the EOS-05 satellite is a major leap for India, which will improve the country's security and environmental monitoring.
