India may play 4 to 6 ODI matches in South Africa

The Indian cricket team is planning to play 4 to 6 ODI matches in South Africa before the 2027 ODI World Cup. This tour is considered important for the team to adapt to African conditions and prepare for the World Cup.

The ICC 2027 ODI World Cup will be played on the soil of South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia from October 4 to November 21. During this mega event, India will have to understand aspects like South Africa's pitches, weather, and batting against fast bowlers.

The Team India management has demanded sufficient matches in African conditions before the World Cup. Accordingly, discussions are ongoing between BCCI and the South African Cricket Association regarding a series of 4 to 6 ODI matches. The schedule or number of matches for this series has not yet been finalized.

India last played an ODI series against South Africa in December 2023 under the captaincy of KL Rahul, in which many senior players were rested. This potential series next year will help Indian players understand the conditions there.

India's 2026-27 home schedule includes three ODIs against West Indies, five ODIs against New Zealand, and three ODIs each against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Additionally, T20 International matches are also scheduled.

South Africa last hosted the Men's ICC World Cup in 2007. India won its first T20 World Cup under MS Dhoni's captaincy that same year and reached the final of that ODI World Cup.

The new Future Tour Program between BCCI and CSA has not yet been finalized, so there is a possibility of holding this bilateral series just before the World Cup. Team India views this as part of their World Cup preparation.
