Three dead, several trapped in Delhi boys' PG building collapse

At least three people died and several others, including many Delhi University students, remain trapped after a boys’ PG building collapsed in Delhi. Rescue operations are underway with the National Disaster Response Force and Delhi Fire Service involved, officials said.

Reports indicate that many students from Delhi University are trapped under the debris. Authorities have appealed for all rescue teams to make every possible effort to reach each student and provide immediate treatment to the injured. "My appeal is that NDRF, Delhi Fire Service, and all rescue teams reach every single student by making every possible effort, ensuring that the injured receive the best possible immediate treatment, so that no effort is spared in saving anyone," a senior official wrote on social media.

The incident has raised questions about the state of educational infrastructure. Around 40-50 students are suspected to be trapped in the rubble at Satya Niketan, highlighting concerns over unsafe and overcrowded PG accommodations due to inadequate hostel facilities. Observers have called the tragedy extremely heartbreaking and alarming, pointing to a pattern of accidents caused by negligence.

Political leaders have criticized the government’s handling of infrastructure safety. One leader questioned, "For how long will students in this country have to pay the price for failing infrastructure and neglect?" Another asked if the Prime Minister would visit Delhi University again to explain how such an incident occurred. The Congress party described the collapse as "an avoidable tragedy" and urged the government to conduct relief and rescue operations at a war footing to quickly extricate those trapped.

Since the incident, student groups have been actively providing assistance at the site. The tragedy has also drawn attention to the perilous conditions under which common citizens live, with some blaming the current regime for insensitivity to such risks. Calls have been made for building safety audits to protect students and prevent future disasters.
