Putin Called Attacks on Russian Ships Terrorism, Indicated Possibility of Peace Talks

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that his anger is not limited to Norway seizing Russian ships, but Ukraine is targeting Russian civilian ships at sea. He termed it terrorism and also discussed the possibility of peace talks. Putin expressed a desire to improve relations with the US and said that contacts between the two countries remain continuous.

Putin expressed anger over Norway detaining the Russian research ship Professor Molchanov. The ship was in the Barentsburg area of Svalbard, where scientists, research staff, their families, and tourists travel. The ship also delivers essential supplies to Russian settlements. Norway seized it not for violating maritime sanctions but over an old compensation case. After Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, it took control of Naftogaz's assets. In 2023, the International Court of The Hague ordered Russia to pay Naftogaz about 4.22 billion dollars. Putin warned that Russia is fully prepared to respond strongly.

The Russian president said that difficulties are increasing regarding peace talks with Ukraine, but the path for talks with the US remains open. He clarified that restoring relations depends not only on Russia's willingness but also significantly on the American side. Referring to US President Donald Trump, Putin said Trump is ready to work positively and constructively to resolve major international issues.

Putin said Russia is ready to end the war and establish lasting peace. He stated that many countries, including the US and China, are ready to cooperate in peace agreement efforts. Putin expressed gratitude to all those contributing to the efforts for a solution.

Putin dismissed reports of new mandatory military recruitment or conscription in Russia. He said Russia currently does not need new conscripts and people are joining the army voluntarily. He mentioned that this campaign is being conducted before the lower house elections in September to influence the election results.

The foreign minister said India has consistently stated that this is not an era of war and this endless war must end. He said President Zelensky and Prime Minister Modi have met on various occasions and some specific aspects of this conflict have been discussed.

Ukraine's President Zelensky emphasized the importance of upcoming meetings. He said these meetings will prove important for peace.
