BRICS Nations Call for Restraint Amid West Asia Tensions

BRICS member states unanimously adopted a joint declaration expressing deep concern over the escalating tensions in the West Asian region. The New Delhi Declaration, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, called for maximum restraint and urged all parties involved to avoid actions that could worsen the situation.

Calls for Restraint and Dialogue

The BRICS joint declaration emphasised the need for exercising maximum restraint and avoiding any actions that might further aggravate the conflict in West Asia. It called on the parties involved to work towards a political settlement and a permanent, comprehensive ceasefire. The declaration also voiced support for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and expressed deep concern over the ongoing fighting in the Gaza Strip.

The statement urged halting any policies aimed at the forced displacement of Palestinians. It further stressed the importance of the smooth flow of global trade, supply chains, and energy, in accordance with applicable international law. The declaration reflected the collective concern of the BRICS nations over the regional instability and its global repercussions.

Regional Security and Sovereignty

The declaration underscored respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, in line with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter. It highlighted that the territorial integrity and security of the West Asian region can only be guaranteed by its main players and the countries comprising it.

While the declaration did not explicitly name all parties, it expressed concern about deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency. It called for upholding nuclear safeguards, safety, and security even amid armed conflicts to protect people and the environment from harm.

India’s Role in Bridging Divides

India played a key role in facilitating consensus among BRICS members amid the West Asia crisis. By hosting the summit in New Delhi, India enabled countries from the region, including Iran and the United Arab Emirates, to engage diplomatically despite their differences. This approach kept difficult conversations ongoing and demonstrated that regional players could sit at the same table to build on converging interests.

The declaration also reflected calls for a just and lasting solution, including the establishment of a sovereign, independent, and viable State of Palestine within internationally recognised 1967 borders, comprising the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
