Modi and Xi Jinping Hold Bilateral Talks to Reset India-China Relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met during the BRICS Summit 2026 to discuss resetting bilateral relations. The meeting focused on strategic cooperation and global issues, marking a significant step in India-China diplomacy, officials said.

The leaders held their bilateral meeting at the summit venue, with security measures including anti-drone systems installed at strategic locations such as the routes around Indira Gandhi International and Palam airports, nearby hotels, and the event site. These systems aim to maintain close surveillance over the skies during the high-profile event.

China had sought visas for a 67-member delegation accompanying President Xi Jinping, with the request made on August 27. The summit schedule for Prime Minister Modi was packed with 15 bilateral meetings over three days, including talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iran’s Pezeshkian.

India-Russia ties also featured prominently, with discussions emphasizing energy and defence cooperation. The talks with President Putin highlighted the deepening strategic partnership between the two countries. Experts noted that defence was a key focus area during these engagements.

Regarding India-China relations, the meeting was described as a first touch on the bilateral agenda, aiming to move away from prolonged conflict towards peace. The special and privileged strategic partnership between India and China was reaffirmed, despite ongoing global tensions.

Officials acknowledged pressures from the United States on India concerning cooperation with Russia but stated that India would resist such efforts. The summit underscored the importance of moving towards an end to war and conflict, reflecting a shared desire for stability.

The meeting took place around midday, with timings noted at 12:10 pm and 12:20 pm, followed by further engagements later in the day. The summit’s comprehensive schedule reflects India’s active diplomatic role in shaping multilateral and bilateral relations within BRICS and beyond.
