Houthi Advance in Yemen Adds New Dimension to Iran War

The Houthi movement has made a rapid advance across the southern reaches of the Tihamah region in Yemen, a development that may introduce a dangerous new dimension to the ongoing Iran war. This advance strengthens their control over a key maritime passage, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which is crucial for global fuel and oil trade, experts say.

The Houthis' recent territorial gains have allowed them to control the area immediately overlooking the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a vital gateway to the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. This control provides them with far more leverage than before, experts note. Previously, they were able to influence what passed through the Bab al-Mandab without holding these territorial positions.

The Bab al-Mandab is one of the world's most important maritime passages, alongside the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf. Controlling more than 35% of the global fuel and oil trade, this region holds significant strategic value. A research fellow at a London institute, Farea al-Muslimi, described this leverage as "as much leverage as a nuclear bomb."

Despite this, it is unlikely that the Houthis will be dislodged any time soon. They are expected to become entrenched in the area, supported by allies such as Lebanese Hezbollah, Hamas in Gaza, and the Assad regime in Syria. This network of support is crucial for their sustained presence and influence in the region.
