On the last day of withdrawal, 45 rebel candidates withdrew their nominations. After this, a total of 179 candidates are in the fray. These include 110 candidates from BJP and Congress, 50 independents, 18 RLP, and one BSP candidate.
There are 14 wards where there will be a direct contest between BJP and Congress candidates. Due to the lack of a third option here, candidates of the two major parties face each other directly. In these wards, the traditional vote bank of the parties along with the candidates’ personal influence and local issues will play a crucial role in winning or losing.
The influence of independent candidates and the votes they receive can also affect the electoral equations of the two major parties. Especially in close contests, independent votes can prove decisive.
In six wards of Barmer Nagar Parishad, RLP candidates are also present, making the contest triangular. The votes received by RLP in these wards will impact the election results. With the presence of BJP, Congress, independents, and RLP, the electoral arithmetic here is complicated, and it will be challenging for any one candidate to gain a clear lead.
Among the 17 crorepati candidates from BJP and Congress, BJP candidate Damaram has the highest declared assets, totaling Rs 13.57 crore.
